Vintage Rose Canvas Print

The story for this artwork developed around this antique object. I found this in a shop in Surrey, just outside of London. When I first saw it, I wasn’t sure what it was, but I loved it anyway! I spoke to the lady in the store and found out it wasn’t a large pin cushion but a lady's footstool! I love the colours and the texture of the stitches.

In this artwork, I’ve printed & painted a rose with a cross stitch texture & then added actual cross stitch threads to make this artwork more textured and 3D. I’ve used this same palette of dusty pinks, earthy browns and sap greens throughout the artwork.

The actual Shophouse is printed in an off-white. I find it interesting the way the Shophouses here in Singapore are made up of a mix of architectural styles. Here you’ll see columns that are more European alongside Peranakan tiles. It’s for this reason that I thought it would be interesting to have a combination of English roses together with Southeast Asian orchids. Singapore has such a mix of cultures, so I’ve represented this with a mix of flowers. In the top left-hand corner, I’ve taken the tile motif from the Shophouse & enlarged it. The pale olive green here is embossed with a layer of velvet fibres. Next to this, I’ve used a sunny gold ink. The little sunbirds have also been painted with sunny yellows. Finally, the old fountain pen writing here adds to the romantic feel of this piece.

The default frame for this print is: Champagne Gold with a White backing.

Our Canvas Prints have been coated for scratch, stain and water resistance. Due to numerous reports of framed prints hung using adhesive-backed hooks/strips falling off the wall, we strongly suggest using more secure hanging methods (eg:nails) or opting for unframed prints.
